Dr. Beatriz Fernández, why did you choose to specialise in Assisted Reproduction?

I was born with the conviction that my true vocation was to help others. Therefore, I have always been aware that, regardless of my profession, I wanted to actively contribute to the happiness of others.

I decided to become a doctor because, although it is a challenging profession at times, the satisfaction of helping patients is the best reward.

However, medicine is actually a very broad field. Looking at what I liked best during my training, I became interested in treatments related to reproduction, gynaecology and women’s health.

Gynaecologists working in the reproductive field are constantly experiencing a wave of new knowledge, which allows us to enjoy what we do every day. I am in love with my work, I enjoy it so much that it allows me to work long days without discouragement.

Dr. Beatriz Fernández, how has reproductive medicine advanced since you started to work?

Reproductive medicine experienced significant advances. New techniques and technologies have been developed that have improved success rates in fertility treatments, such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF), artificial insemination and cryopreservation of eggs and embryos.

In addition, research has been conducted in areas such as reproductive genetics, epigenetics and male reproductive health, leading to a better understanding of the factors that affect fertility.

Overall, these advances have expanded the options available to couples seeking to conceive and have improved the chances of success in assisted reproductive treatments.

The time-lapse incubators (Embryoscope and Geri), which are now the closest thing to a mother’s womb, were one of the most significant acquisitions.

What surprises you most about being a fertility specialist?

What surprises me most is the complexity and diversity of situations we face on a daily basis.

Each case is unique and presents different challenges, which requires a personalised approach and constant updating of knowledge and techniques.

The ability to help people fulfil their desire to become parents is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding parts of this specialty.

Dr. Beatriz Fernández, what advice would you give to patients who are starting their fertility treatment?

I understand how important this time is for you. My advice would be to stay positive and patient throughout the process.

It is normal to feel overwhelmed but remember that you are taking an important step towards your dream of parenthood. Don’t hesitate to communicate openly with your medical team, ask any questions you have and follow their instructions to the letter.

It is also essential to take care of your emotional and physical well-being during this time – lots of encouragement and confidence that everything will work out!
