‘Becoming a mother at 47 thanks to Vida Fertility’”

Every motherhood story is unique. That of our international patient at 47 is a story of courage, perseverance and love.

After several miscarriages and years of trying, she is now the mother of a 13-month-old girl, born thanks to IVF treatment with egg donation at Vida Fertility Madrid.

Thanks to her generosity, Gemma (not her real name to preserve her anonymity) shares her real story about becoming a mother at 47.

Over time, fertility naturally declines: the ovarian reserve decreases, the quality of the eggs declines and the likelihood of genetic abnormalities increases. This explains why, after the age of 40, the chances of spontaneous pregnancy are only around 5% per month and why the rates of recurrent miscarriage and implantation failure are higher.

Even with treatments such as in vitro fertilisation, many women find that most of their embryos are not genetically viable. In fact, genetic studies carried out during embryonic development show that more than 90% of eggs in advanced ages may have chromosomal abnormalities.

For all these reasons, it is not surprising that many patients — such as Gemma, the protagonist of this testimonial — find egg donation a real and hopeful alternative.

Egg donation treatment

Egg donation is a form of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) with the particularity that the egg that will give rise to the embryo is provided by a donor.

Eggs from young, healthy donors allow for very high success rates, exceeding 80% in many cases, offering a solid chance of pregnancy even when previous attempts have failed.

After the age of 40, it is still possible to become a mother. Sometimes this involves exploring new avenues, such as double donation or egg donation, but always with the most important goal in mind: fulfilling the desire to have a child with the best possible guarantees.

Real testimony – Becoming a mother at 47

The desire for motherhood stronger than any obstacle

“I am the mother of three daughters: two older ones from a previous relationship and a little one who is 13 months old. My current partner and I decided to have a child when I was about to turn 42. I got pregnant right away, which filled us with joy… but the pregnancy ended at 7 weeks. Months later, I got pregnant again, but it ended again.”

The years passed and natural attempts stopped working. In France, IVF is not permitted after the age of 43, and the path seemed to be closing. Until one day, by chance, Gemma saw a television programme about fertility treatments abroad.

How did you find out about Vida Fertility?

“I contacted two clinics, including Vida Fertility in Madrid. From the very first call, I felt listened to and understood. I immediately felt confident.”

After the initial tests, Gemma began hormone treatment. In May 2023, she travelled to Madrid with her partner. Three embryos were obtained. The first two attempts were unsuccessful, but the medical team persisted, adjusting the protocol and supporting them every step of the way.

Successful treatment and frozen embryos

‘The last embryo, our last chance, was transferred in February 2024… and it worked. On 12 October, our little princess was born.’

Today, Gemma and her partner enjoy every moment with their daughter.

“We will never be able to thank Dr Katharina Spies and coordinator Sonia Ammouche enough for accompanying us on this journey. The journey wasn’t always easy, but if we had to do it again, we would do so without hesitation. Our daughter fills our lives with happiness.”

Becoming a mother after 40 is possible

There are as many situations as there are women, and it is they who will ultimately write their own stories. This testimony reflects the stories of many women who, every year, find a new opportunity in Spain thanks to egg donation.

At Vida Fertility, we believe that every desire for motherhood deserves to be heard and accompanied with warmth and medical excellence.
