Male infertility: causes and solutions

Did you know that 30% of cases of problems getting pregnant are due to male infertility causes?
At Vida Fertility, we know how important it is for you to start a family. That is why we have a team of experts in male infertility and an andrology laboratory equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Our goal is to identify the causes of male infertility and offer you personalised solutions to help you have a baby.
Causes of male infertility
Male infertility can be due to several causes, such as excessive medication, an unhealthy lifestyle, STIs or semen pathologies: oligozoospermia, teratozoospermia, asthenozoospermia, etc.
These causes can affect sperm quality and thus influence the chances of achieving pregnancy. However, in the majority of our patients, the causes of male infertility are treated and reversed.
Diagnostic Tests for Male Infertility
At Vida Fertility, from your first visit, we can provide you with a diagnosis and a personalised treatment proposal.
We have the most advanced diagnostic tests to detect the causes of infertility:
- Advanced semen analysis.
- Sperm culture.
- Double-stranded DNA fragmentation test.
- FISH test with detection of chromosomal abnormalities in spermatozoa.
- Constitutional karyotype in blood
- Hormonal study
- Immunological study

Personalised treatment
You decide at all times, we respect your time. Once we have chosen the best Assisted Reproduction technique for you, we start the personalised fertility treatment.
Fertilisation with the best sperm selection techniques
When the eggs are fertilised, our laboratory will decide on the most appropriate sperm selection technique depending on the quality of the sample obtained, in order to optimise embryo quality.
Fertility treatments for male infertility
Depending on the results and analyses obtained, the fertility specialist can recommend among all these fertility treatments for male infertility:
Improve lifestyle
Changes such as a balanced diet, regular exercise and avoiding harmful substances can improve sperm quality. Based on the results of the diagnostic tests, our specialists will be able to make recommendations for the diet and vitamin supplements needed to optimise sperm quality.

Surgery and Testicular biopsy
Surgical interventions such as varicocele correction help to restore fertility in specific cases.
Obtains sperm directly from the testicle in cases of azoospermia or reduced motility.
Assisted Reproduction Techniques and Sperm Selection
Vida Fertility laboratories use the most advanced laboratory technologies to optimise results and embryo quality. In case of limited sperm quality, techniques such as sperm micro-injection (ICSI), Time-Lapse incubators, or specific culture media can help improve results.
Sperm selection techniques are varied and adapted to each case: microfluidic technique (Zymot), SpermMobile, Spermslow…

Sperm donor
This option is recommended when it is not possible to use the patient’s own semen, guaranteeing the quality and safety of the sample.
Gamete donation in Spain is strictly controlled and legislated to guarantee the quality and anonymity of the donor. Donor selection is based on physical characteristics (race, hair colour, eye colour, skin colour, height).
At Vida Fertility we work with external donor banks to be able to propose donors without a waiting list and with a wide range of phenotypes.

FAQ’s about male infertility
How do you know if a man has infertility?
To determine if a man has infertility, a semen analysis, known as a spermiogram, is performed. This test evaluates the quality, quantity and motility of the sperm.
In some cases, additional tests such as hormone analysis, karyotype or ultrasound may be necessary to identify possible causes.
At vida Fertility we perform these tests in the first fertility consultation.
What is the percentage of infertility in men?
According to SEF data, approximately 30-40% of infertility cases in couples are due to male factors. This highlights the importance of a comprehensive diagnosis that includes both the man and the woman when investigating causes of infertility in achieving pregnancy.
What is the most common cause of male infertility?
One of the most common causes is varicocele, an enlargement of the veins in the testicles that affects sperm production and quality. Other common factors include hormonal disturbances, infections, genetic problems, exposure to toxins or unhealthy lifestyles.
What is the importance of karyotyping?
Karyotyping is essential in certain cases of male infertility, as it analyses the structure and number of chromosomes. Genetic alterations can influence sperm quality and the possibility of transmitting genetic problems to the embryo.
At Vida Fertility it is a key test to personalise treatment and guarantee safety in assisted reproduction procedures.
How are sperm donors selected?
At Vida Fertility, we follow a rigorous selection process to guarantee the perfect match and quality of the donated sperm. Donors undergo complete medical evaluations that include genetic, hormonal and fertility analyses, as well as psychological studies.

Real experiences from Vida Fertility’s patients

It is incredible how, from absolute resignation, these doctors have lifted my spirits. They got me pregnant and gave me my life back. They live up to their name.

I had to find a way to become a mother if I wanted to pursue my career and not settle for just any partner. I made the right choice.

From the very first moment I felt I was being listened to, understood, and above all, I felt that my treatment was finally going in the right direction.

Hello dear Mrs Ortega,
you and the whole team of Vida fertility make us so happy. Finally a relief that we can be helped! Many thanks to you and all the others for the great care and exceptional quality work. This high quality means a lot to us. We hope that in 2024 we can take a healthy baby full of love into our arms.❤️

Thanks to Dr. Kathi’s support and by following all her advice, the best moment of the treatment came: I got pregnant.

I didn’t know if I would ever be able to get pregnant and now I’m in my 5th month of pregnancy.

It hasn’t been an easy journey. After the second attempt, I am happy to say that in two months I will be meeting my little girl.

Being able to experience this shared motherhood has been a gift for the two of us.
THANK YOU to this great team for everything!

We highly recommend Vida Fertility to anyone who has already given up hope and wants to give it one last try.

A huge thank you to the entire Vida Fertility team, especially to Sophie and Dr. Spies, who helped us achieve the wonderful project of expanding our family. We met a very competent team who perfectly guided and advised us on the medical choices to make at each stage of our journey. 🫶

I recommend Vida Fertility for their professionalism, humanism, and availability.
Our wonderful baby is the proof that the results are there!
Thank you!

Thanks to Vida fertility, we are now mums. Mums!!
It’s the greatest gift of all, we’re so happy!

The good feeling will certainly have contributed to the success of the treatment.
When we first contacted the clinic, I didn’t expect to become a mum so quickly, and now I even have hope that we might be able to create a sibling for our son with the remaining blastocysts.
Thank you!

I chose Vida Fertility because it’s a clinic that offers human support from the very beginning. I’m convinced that my state of mind, so influenced by the unconditional support they gave me, was key to the success of my treatment.

At the first consultation, I felt heard, understood, and full of hope again. The final transfer, our last chance, took place in February 2024… and it worked. Our little girl has brought immense joy to our whole family.

Being a single parent brings challenges, but I’d recommend anyone thinking about it to go for it. Vida Fertility made my dream come true with my first IVF.
