Dr. Marta Zermiani, why did you choose to specialize in fertility?

I always wanted to be a doctor, I don’t know why. My parents tell me that I knew it from a very young age, and the truth is that I really enjoy my work.

I’ve always been interested in gynecology, especially everything related to pregnancy and childbirth. Later, during my studies and residency, I also became interested in endocrinology.

In the end, I was drawn to assisted reproduction partly because of my background. When I finished my residency in Barcelona, many job opportunities in assisted reproduction clinics opened up to me because I am Italian and also speak French. And I liked it.

I enjoy being able to help my Italian patients who came for treatments that are not allowed in Italy; I felt that what I had done in coming to live and work here in Madrid made even more sense. I love having patients of all nationalities.

What has surprised you the most about Assisted Reproduction?

The transition from theory to practice with patients seems distant to me: it is a very intense moment. You have to learn to be a real doctor and to interact with patients, to empathize and at the same time not to burden yourself with their problems, as you see health problems all day long.

The relationship with patients evolves over time; I am not the same person I was 15 years ago when I started my residency, or 10 or 5 years ago. You mature and grow, and the relationships with them change too. I am increasingly less afraid of being myself and of shortening the doctor-patient distance that must exist for a fertility treatment to work, that’s my secret.

What advice can you give to patients who come to a fertility clinic for the first time?

That they will succeed, one way or another! And it’s true; most of them do.

I am always surprised by the irrationality of the desire for pregnancy in women, how visceral it is. It’s something they can’t put aside for a moment. After experiencing my pregnancies and the birth of my children, I understood it even better, and I’m glad to be able to help them not only in the purely medical aspect but also in the emotional part.

There is a very significant emotional burden that is often difficult to manage. I believe empathy is a very important part of my work, especially for foreign patients who have to go to another country to undergo these treatments.

What is the most special moment you experience with your patients?

There are many; each stage is special—the egg retrieval, the embryo transfer, the beta test, the post-beta with pregnancy ultrasounds. But my favorite is when I see the children, as they come to the clinic to introduce them to me or send me pictures and tell me how the birth went or how the first days are.

That’s when I see the families I helped create and think about how they were and how they are now. I have patients who send me pictures of their children long after they are born, and it’s something that fills me with joy.
