Egg Freezing Process in Spain: The Step-by-Step Process of Vitrification

Fertility preservation through vitrification has gained popularity in Spain as a viable option for women who wish to postpone childbearing.

Whether for personal, professional or medical reasons, this technique offers an opportunity to preserve a woman’s reproductive capacity at an older age.

We spoke to medical director Dr. Katharina Spies about the step-by-step of egg freezing or social freezing in Spain.

What is vitrification or fertility preservation?

Vitrification is an advanced method of rapid freezing that prevents the formation of ice crystals, which can damage cells. This process is used to preserve eggs, allowing them to remain viable for future use in fertility treatments.

The Egg Freezing Process in Spain

First Step: Initial Consultation – Egg freezing process

The process begins with an initial consultation where the patient’s reproductive health is assessed and her expectations and goals are discussed.

According to Dr. Spies: ‘It is vital that the patient fully understands the benefits and limitations of the procedure’.

Ovarian Stimulation

Next, ovarian stimulation is performed.

This step involves the use of hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs.

During this time, the patient will need to visit the clinic two or three times during the stimulation, as she will be closely monitored by ultrasound scans and blood tests.

Ovarian puncture – Egg freezing process

Once the eggs are ready, an ovarian puncture is performed under sedation. This procedure involves collecting eggs directly from the ovaries with the help of an ultrasound-guided needle.

‘Ovarian puncture is performed in the operating theatre and is a very simple procedure that takes no more than 30 minutes. After the procedure, the patient can lead a normal life’. says Dr Spies.

Oocyte vitrification – Egg freezing process in Spain

The retrieved eggs are immediately vitrified to preserve their quality. This step is crucial to ensure that the eggs maintain their viability until they are ready to be used for future fertility treatment.

Predicting egg quality

At Vida Fertility, we have innovative technology that is changing the way eggs are vitrified. It is called VIOLET™, an artificial intelligence system designed to assess the quality of oocytes before freezing.

Using advanced algorithms, VIOLET™ examines images of each egg individually and estimates its reproductive capacity. This method, which is completely non-invasive and trained with a large volume of data, allows us to predict the probability of fertilisation and its development to the blastocyst stage with great accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Egg freezing process

This section may include answers to common questions such as the length of the process, costs, success rates, and what to consider before deciding on egg freezing.

What is the best age to freeze eggs?

The best age for egg freezing is when a woman is at the peak of her fertility, usually between the ages of 20 and 35. From this age onwards, the quality and quantity of the eggs are poorer, which reduces the chances of success with your own eggs in future fertility treatments.

How long can an egg be frozen?

Eggs can remain frozen indefinitely without loss of quality thanks to vitrification technology. There is no set time limit for how long eggs can be frozen.

At what age can a woman become pregnant with frozen eggs?

A woman can use her frozen eggs to try to get pregnant up to the age of 50.

Where are the frozen eggs stored?

After the vitrification process, the eggs are carefully stored in special liquid nitrogen tanks at a temperature of -196°C. These tanks are designed to keep the eggs in the freezing process.

These tanks are designed to keep the eggs in an optimal state of preservation until they are needed for fertility treatment.

Where is it best to freeze eggs?
