Beatriz Lozano, why did you choose to specialise in Assisted Reproduction?
I have always been fascinated by biology and how life originates. When I discovered the field of Assisted Reproduction, I felt an immediate connection: it is a very technical and scientific discipline, but also deeply human. Being able to help so many people fulfil their dream of becoming mothers or fathers is a privilege that excites me every day.
Beatriz Lozano, how has Reproductive Medicine advanced since you entered the workforce?
Reproductive Medicine in Spain has advanced greatly. In just a few years, I have seen how reproductive techniques have become more precise and personalised.
Improvements in culture media, advances in genetics and even artificial intelligence are leading to ever-higher success rates. The way we support patients has also changed: we are increasingly taking care of the emotional and personal aspects of the whole process.
Beatriz Lozano, how many languages do you speak?
I speak Spanish, fluent English and a little French. It is important for me to be able to communicate with patients, especially because I know how important it is to feel understood at such a special and delicate time as fertility treatment.
Beatriz Lozano, what continues to surprise you most about being a fertility specialist?
What continues to surprise me most as a fertility specialist is how such scientific and microscopic work in the laboratory can have such an immense impact on the life of a family. That blend of science and humanity continues to be the most amazing thing about this profession.
Beatriz Lozano, is there any particular area of the laboratory that you particularly like (vitrification, embryo selection, andrology, etc.)?
What I like most is vitrification because I feel that with this technique we can give patients something as valuable as time.
The possibility of preserving oocytes or embryos opens up options for them and allows them to make more calm decisions about their reproductive plans.
Beatriz Lozano, what diagnostic test do you recommend to your patients?
It depends a lot on each case, but one fertility test that I find very useful in many treatments is the ovarian reserve study. It gives us a clear idea of the starting point and helps us to personalise the treatment much better.
In your opinion, what is the most important factor in increasing the chances of success in fertility treatments?
I believe that one of the most important factors is understanding that each treatment must be completely personalised.
There are no magic formulas that work for everyone.
Each patient has their own history, body and circumstances, and adapting the treatment is key. In addition, the age and quality of the eggs and sperm are fundamental biological elements, but so is the emotional environment. When the patient feels understood, informed and calm, everything flows better. Trust and communication with the team make a big difference.
Beatriz Lozano, what advice would you give to patients who are starting their fertility treatment?
I would tell them that they are not alone and that it is normal to feel fear, frustration or anxiety, but that behind every step we take there is a great deal of science, experience and, above all, humanity.
I would also tell them to trust the team, ask everything they need to know, and trust both physically and emotionally. And something very important: don’t forget your bond as a couple or as individuals. Fertility is a journey that is travelled with the body, but also with the heart.
