Are you thinking about freezing your eggs? The 8 key points to consider when choosing the best fertility clinic

Choosing the best clinic for egg freezing is not just a matter of comparing prices. You also need to know who will be managing your case, how the stimulation treatment will be tailored to your ovarian reserve, which team will carry out the vitrification, and where your oocytes will be stored until you decide to use them.
We spoke to the medical director of Vida Fertility Madrid, Dr Katharina Spies, about everything you need to know when choosing the best clinic for egg freezing in Spain.
Before we begin, we should make it clear that egg freezing is a means of preserving fertility, not a guarantee of pregnancy.
Our job is to assess each case, explain what can be expected from the treatment and support the patient in a decision that must be entirely personal.

What is egg freezing?
Vitrification is a fertility preservation technique that allows a woman’s eggs to be frozen for when she decides to become a mother. This advance in reproductive medicine has given women the freedom and opportunity to choose, as it is not always the right time to have a baby.
This postponement of motherhood, made possible by oocyte vitrification, ensures that the eggs are preserved with the same quality as when they were cryopreserved.
What is the process for freezing eggs?
In summary, the process for freezing eggs at Vida Fertility includes:
- Consultation and assessment of ovarian reserve.
- Design of a personalised protocol.
- Ovarian stimulation.
- Ultrasound scans.
- Ovarian puncture under sedation.
- Identification of mature oocytes.
- Vitrification and storage.
If you’d like to find out more about each stage in detail, you can read our article on the step-by-step egg freezing process here.

What makes a good clinic for egg freezing?
There is no official ranking to determine which is the best clinic for egg freezing in Spain. However, to compare clinics effectively, it is advisable to assess their healthcare authorisation, the medical and embryology teams, the laboratory’s experience, the personalisation of the protocol and the information provided before treatment begins.
A personalised assessment before stimulation
Fertility preservation should not begin with a one-size-fits-all protocol for all patients.
Before treatment, the specialist must review:
- Age and fertility
- Assessment of ovarian reserve, via ultrasound to count antral follicles and an AMH blood test.
- Clinical history and medical background.
- Menstrual cycle.
- Previous surgeries.
- Possible uterine conditions and pathologies, and any treatment that may affect fertility.
These tests, carried out before egg freezing, help to estimate ovarian reserve and the likely response to stimulation, but they do not directly determine egg quality* nor guarantee how many eggs will be retrieved.
At Vida Fertility, we use this assessment to tailor the dose, monitoring and timing of the egg retrieval to each patient.
Specialists who explain the real possibilities
A good consultation should not simply tell you that you can freeze your eggs. It should also answer questions such as:
- How many oocytes might we expect to retrieve?
- Might I need more than one stimulation cycle?
- How will these eggs be used in the future?
- What happens if I don’t end up using them?
The answers will not be the same for every woman. That is why I would be wary of any clinic that promises a specific number of eggs or a future pregnancy before assessing your individual case.

Our own assisted reproduction laboratory
Egg retrieval is only one part of the treatment. Following ovarian puncture, the laboratory must identify the mature oocytes, prepare them and vitrify them correctly.
Vitrification is an ultra-rapid freezing technique that prevents the formation of ice crystals capable of damaging the cellular structure. The oocytes are then stored under controlled conditions until the patient decides to use them.
Having our own laboratory facilitates immediate coordination between the medical and embryology teams. At Vida Fertility, both teams work together throughout the process to ensure that clinical and laboratory information form part of a single strategy.
Technological Advances and State-of-the-Art Equipment
Technology can help us gain a better understanding of oocyte characteristics, but it should not be used to create unrealistic expectations.
At Vida Fertility, we use VIOLET™, an artificial intelligence tool that analyses images of oocytes prior to their vitrification.
VIOLET™ is an artificial intelligence technique capable of analysing the quality of oocytes before they are frozen.
Thanks to artificial intelligence, VIOLET™ analyses images of each individual egg to estimate its reproductive potential. This non-invasive system, trained on tens of thousands of images, can predict the likelihood of fertilisation and development to the blastocyst stage.
VIOLET does not replace medical expertise, but is a tool capable of improving reproductive outcomes.
Monitoring throughout stimulation
During ovarian stimulation, hormonal medication is administered to promote the development of several follicles. The response is monitored via ultrasound scans and, where indicated, hormone tests.
These checks allow the medication to be adjusted and the most appropriate time for egg retrieval to be determined. The exact duration depends on each woman’s response, so it should not be viewed as a strictly fixed schedule.
At Vida Fertility, we aim to tailor the treatment plan to the patient’s personal or professional circumstances wherever medically possible. However, safety and the response of the ovaries must continue to set the pace of treatment.
Clear information on cost
Depending on the fertility tests required and the medical protocol to be used, the cost of egg freezing may vary. That is why, at Vida Fertility, we carry out a personalised assessment of each case.
No two stories are the same, and at Vida we want to understand yours. Before choosing a clinic, it is advisable to ask whether the quote includes:
- The initial consultation and tests.
- Ultrasound scans.
- Ovarian puncture and sedation.
- Laboratory work.
- Oocyte vitrification.
- Storage.
- Hormone medication.
- Future treatment to use the eggs.
At Vida Fertility, we provide a quote tailored to the recommended protocol. The final cost may vary depending on the medication, the necessary tests and the services included; therefore, it would not be accurate to offer the same figure to all patients without first assessing their individual situation.
Safety and healthcare authorisations
The clinic must be authorised to carry out the necessary assisted reproduction procedures, including the retrieval and storage of oocytes.
The Ministry of Health maintains a public register where authorised centres and their treatment units can be consulted. Relevant categories include in vitro fertilisation, oocyte retrieval and oocyte or embryo banks.
Support and continuity of care
Egg freezing can be approached with excitement, doubts or even a certain amount of pressure due to the passing of time. Medical care must also recognise this emotional aspect.
At Vida Fertility, we aim for the patient to maintain ongoing communication with the specialist and the team familiar with her case. According to Dr Spies, “For me, this continuity is particularly important: it prevents the woman from having to explain her history all over again at every consultation and makes it easier to adapt decisions to her progress”.
We don’t want you to feel like a number or to make a decision out of fear. We want you to understand what we do, why we recommend it and what the limitations of the procedure are.

Frequently asked questions about choosing a clinic for egg freezing
Dr Katharina Spies answers:
How long can my eggs remain frozen?
The storage period is indefinite. Having the oocytes frozen does not in itself reduce the biological age the eggs had at the time of vitrification. However, before they are used, the woman’s current age and state of health must be assessed, as the risks associated with pregnancy increase with the mother’s age.
Up to what age can I use my frozen eggs?
Although there is no single maximum age set by law for all patients in Spain, at our Vida Fertility clinics we set the age limit at 50 for ethical and medical reasons. The medical team must assess whether a pregnancy can proceed safely, taking into account the patient’s age, state of health and any potential obstetric risks.
What is the best age to freeze eggs?
There is no ‘perfect’ age that applies to all women. Generally speaking, freezing eggs at a younger age allows for the preservation of oocytes with a better reproductive prognosis than doing so when oocyte quality has already declined.
This does not mean that all women should vitrify their eggs, nor that the treatment cannot be considered after the age of 35. The decision must take into account age, ovarian reserve, plans for motherhood and the realistic possibility of attempting to conceive in the coming years.
If you think you might be postponing motherhood, I recommend finding out more before your age starts to limit your options. Having a consultation does not mean you have to freeze your eggs; it means understanding your situation so that you can make an informed decision.
Private clinic or the National Health Service for egg freezing?
When vitrification is requested for personal or professional reasons, it is normally carried out at a private fertility clinic.
Within the public health system, fertility preservation is usually considered primarily when there is a medical indication, for example, before certain treatments that may damage ovarian function. The specific criteria may vary depending on the autonomous community and the hospital.
Before making a decision, it is advisable to check the eligibility criteria for your regional health service and compare not only the price, but also the waiting times, medical criteria, storage conditions and the follow-up care provided.
