Francesca Venusti, Why did you choose to specialise in Assisted Reproduction?

I chose to specialise in assisted reproduction because being part of a process that is so important for so many families is something very special.

I still find it extraordinary to be able to see with my own eyes how human development begins from something as small and complex as an embryo.

Furthermore, it is a specialism that requires a great deal of dedication, teamwork and constant updating. For me, embryology combines science, precision and emotion in a unique way.

What continues to surprise you most about being an embryologist?

What continues to surprise me most every day as an embryologist is that every embryo has its own rhythm, its own progression and a unique way of developing.

Although in the laboratory we work with techniques that are highly precise, under controlled conditions and following carefully defined protocols, every case reminds us that assisted reproduction is not a standardised process. Every embryo responds differently, and that means our work requires observation, patience and constant attention to every detail.

For me, accompanying that embryonic development from the laboratory is something very special. Behind every embryo there is a story, a hope and a family waiting for an opportunity. And being able to be part of such a decisive moment is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful aspects of embryology.

Francesca, is there any particular area within the laboratory that interests you most (andrology, embryo culture, quality)…?

What particularly catches my attention is embryo culture and following embryonic development day by day. The most interesting thing for me is seeing how each embryo develops differently.

In your opinion, what is the most important factor in increasing the chances of success in fertility treatments?

Precision and personalisation of the treatment are key; every step of the process counts. Of course, so too is the collaboration and continuous exchange of information amongst the entire team at the fertility clinic.

Francesca Venusti, if you could say something to a patient who is thinking of postponing motherhood, what would you say?

I would recommend that she speaks to professionals and ensures she has all the information she needs to make a decision with peace of mind. It is a very personal decision, but it is important to be aware of all the options.

Sometimes the decision to postpone motherhood is made without having all the facts about one’s own body, and it may be that, when the desire to become a mother arises, the biological window of opportunity is more limited.

It’s not about putting pressure on you or rushing a decision, but about having clear information so you can choose with greater freedom.

And if you don’t know right now whether you want to be a mother, that’s fine. But knowing about alternatives such as fertility preservation can bring peace of mind and allow you to make decisions with more tools at your disposal.

Motherhood doesn’t always come at the moment we imagine, but we can prepare ourselves so that, when that moment arrives, there are more options in our favour.

What advice would you give to patients who are starting their fertility treatment?

To patients starting their fertility treatment, I would say to trust the team supporting them, to speak to the various specialists and explain their own needs, concerns or questions.

Assisted reproduction is not always a straightforward journey, but never lose hope. Because we will be by your side to support you in your dream of becoming parents.
