Marina Terol, fertility specialist embryologist at Vida Fertility Alicante
An essential part of any assisted reproduction treatment takes place in a setting that patients do not always get to see up close: the embryology laboratory.
It is here that some of the most delicate stages of the treatment take place. Oocytes are assessed, semen samples are prepared, fertilisation takes place and the development of the embryos is monitored during their first few days of growth.
That is why we would like to introduce you to Marina Terol, a clinical embryologist on the team at Vida Fertility Alicante. With a degree in Biotechnology and specialising in Reproductive Medicine and Genetics, Marina has spent more than six years building her career in assisted reproduction laboratories in Valencia and Madrid.
She is currently part of the embryology team at Vida Fertility Alicante, where she combines her scientific expertise with a caring and deeply human approach to laboratory work. For Marina, every embryo is unique. Her professional career has given her a comprehensive perspective on clinical embryology and laboratory work, as well as a deep understanding of the need to tailor each procedure to the characteristics and needs of each patient. In addition to this, she has gained language skills through her work experience, including Spanish, English and Italian.
Furthermore, Marina is continuously updating her training, regularly attending national and international conferences such as ASEBIR and ESHRE, as well as other courses and scientific seminars that allow her to continue learning and developing within a constantly evolving discipline.
Marina Terol, why did you choose to specialise in Assisted Reproduction?
My first encounter with embryology was during my Erasmus year in Italy, working with zebrafish embryos in a research setting.
Discovering how life develops from its earliest stages sparked a curiosity that has stayed with me ever since. That experience opened up a whole new world for me and made me realise that I wanted to dedicate myself to embryology.
On returning to Spain, I decided to specialise in assisted reproduction so that I could apply that knowledge in a field that has a direct impact on people’s lives and support them on their journey towards motherhood and fatherhood.
Marina Terol, what continues to surprise you most about being an embryology specialist?
It never ceases to amaze me that something so small can have such enormous potential. Every embryo is unique, and being part of its first few days of development is still something that moves me deeply.
Working in embryology allows me to observe how each embryo follows its own rhythm and develops in a different way.
No two processes are exactly the same, which is why every day in the laboratory brings something new to learn.
This is one of the most important realities of clinical embryology: although there are scientific criteria and rigorous protocols, each embryo must be observed and assessed on an individual basis. The team’s experience, precision in every procedure and laboratory conditions are crucial during these early stages of embryonic development.
Being part of this process reminds me every day of the responsibility and privilege involved in working in an assisted reproduction laboratory. Behind every embryo there is a story, a hope and a person or couple hoping to fulfil their life’s dream.
Embryonic development: supporting every stage from the laboratory
From fertilisation to the formation of the blastocyst, each embryo goes through different stages of development which the embryology team carefully observes and monitors from the laboratory.
During these first few days, the rate of cell division, the embryo’s progression and its characteristics are assessed, whilst always recognising that each embryo is unique and may develop differently.
This constant monitoring enables us to make personalised decisions and provide each embryo with the best possible conditions during a crucial phase of the treatment.
Marina, What do you enjoy most about your work?
What I value most is knowing that, even though patients don’t always see us, we are part of one of the most important moments in their lives.
In the laboratory, every detail counts. That’s why we work with the utmost precision, care and dedication, aware that behind every sample and every embryo there is much more than just a scientific procedure: there is a story, a dream and a life plan.
Knowing that our work can help a person or a couple fulfil their dream of starting a family is, without a doubt, one of the most exciting and rewarding aspects of my profession.
If you could say something to a patient who is thinking of postponing motherhood, what would you say?
I would tell her to find out more and understand her reproductive situation. Having reliable information and receiving specialist advice from fertility experts enables her to make more informed decisions and to assess the various options available in good time.
It is not about causing concern or putting pressure on any woman regarding when she should become a mother, but rather about providing her with the tools she needs to decide, with greater freedom, which option best suits her circumstances and her life plans.
Marina Terol, what advice would you give to patients who are starting their fertility treatment?
I would advise them to take the process step by step and not to be afraid to raise any questions they may have. It is completely normal to feel uncertainty, impatience or a wide range of emotions throughout the treatment. This is also true if you have already experienced a failed IVF cycle or recurrent miscarriages.
