nuria rubio riquelme embriologa vida fertility

Passionate about science and deeply committed to human support, Nuria Rubio Riquelme is part of the laboratory team at Vida Fertility Alicante, where she works every day where magic happens in assisted reproduction: in the heart of the creation of life.

With a degree in Biology and specialising in Clinical Embryology, Nuria combines precision, technique and sensitivity. She speaks Spanish and English, which allows her to accompany both national and international patients through every stage of fertility treatment.

For her, embryology represents the perfect union between scientific knowledge and human care. She firmly believes that every embryo tells a story, and that behind every treatment there is hope, strength and a dream.

Why did you choose to specialise in Assisted Reproduction?

I have always been passionate about science, but I also wanted to do something where I could care for and support people.

Embryology is the perfect combination: applying scientific knowledge to help create life and fulfil many people’s dream of becoming parents.

Ever since I discovered it, I knew I wanted to dedicate myself to this speciality.

Nuria Rubio, how has reproductive medicine advanced since you entered the workforce?

It has advanced tremendously. From the development of new laboratory techniques, improvements in embryo culture, more advanced genetic analysis, to a more comprehensive and individualised view of the patient.

It is now common practice to personalise fertility treatments to make them more effective and respectful of each patient. The technology and quality of assisted reproduction laboratories has also improved, which translates into better success rates.

It is a field that is constantly evolving.

What continues to surprise you most about being a fertility specialist?

What excites me most and continues to surprise me every day as a fertility specialist in Alicante is the strength of the patients.

The courage with which they face each test, each wait, each small step… is truly admirable.

Sometimes they arrive with very difficult stories behind them, but they keep going, with hope, with enthusiasm, with immense courage to fulfil their dream of becoming parents.

Each embryo is a story, a desire, a future. Being there, at such a decisive moment in someone’s life, is a privilege.

Nuria, is there any branch of assisted reproduction that you particularly like?

Genetics, without a doubt, because it allows us to go much further: to understand the “why” behind many failures or difficulties. It is a tool that allows us to see details that escape us at first glance, and that can make the difference between trying again… or actually succeeding.

But, as a laboratory technician, I would say ICSI. For me, it is the technique that represents the heart of the laboratory: selecting the best sperm and microinjecting it into the egg, with all the delicacy and precision that it requires. It is a magical and very technical moment at the same time. Knowing that a life can be born from that gesture is incredible.

What diagnostic test do you recommend to your patients?

It depends a lot on each case, as each person is unique. But a good initial assessment is key: knowing the ovarian reserve, the quality of the semen, the condition of the uterus… The key is to personalise the diagnosis in order to design the most appropriate treatment for each patient.

In your opinion, what is the most important factor in increasing the chances of success in fertility treatments?

Personalisation. Listening, understanding each patient’s history and adapting the treatment to their needs; no two cases are the same. And, of course, teamwork. When the fertility clinic, the medical team, the laboratory and the patient work together, everything is much easier.

Nuria Rubio, if you could say something to a patient who is thinking about postponing motherhood, what would you say?

I would tell her to get informed. To learn about her body, her ovarian reserve, and the options she has today to preserve her fertility for the future.

Often, the decision to wait is made without having all the information, and sometimes when the desire to become a mother arises, it is biologically too late.

It’s not about putting pressure on yourself, but about being well informed so that you can choose freely. Knowledge is power.

And if it’s not the right time to be a mother, that’s fine. But knowing that you can preserve your eggs, for example, can give you peace of mind. Motherhood doesn’t always come when we want it to, but we can do things so that when the time comes, you have more tools at your disposal.

What advice would you give to patients who are starting fertility treatment?

Surround yourselves with a team you trust and with whom you feel comfortable and supported. It’s very important that you don’t feel alone. Having someone, family, friends, professionals… to talk to and confide in is very important. Don’t compare yourselves to other stories, and allow yourselves to go through the process in your own way. We will be by their side every step of the way, doing everything possible to make their dream come true.
