At Vida Fertility, a fundamental part of the assisted reproduction journey takes place in the laboratory.

That is why we would like you to meet Irene Reguera, clinical embryologist at the Vida Fertility Madrid laboratory. Her work forms part of one of the most delicate and decisive areas of fertility: embryonic development, laboratory quality and the application of science to increase the chances of achieving a healthy pregnancy.

Irene combines a solid background in Medical Biology and Reproductive Technology with an international career in fertility clinics in Spain and abroad, including Italy, Equatorial Guinea and Ireland. This experience has enabled her to work in very different settings, learn about various approaches to assisted reproduction and reinforce a clear conviction: behind every embryo lies a life project.

Irene Reguera, why did you choose to specialise in Assisted Reproduction?

I chose to specialise in assisted reproduction because I have always been passionate about the beginning of life and being able to put that into practice on a daily basis.

Assisted reproduction is a science with a huge impact on patients’ lives. In the laboratory we work with cells, oocytes, sperm and embryos, but behind every sample there is a story, a hope and often a journey that has not been easy.

That makes embryology a highly technical profession, but also a deeply human one. Every decision made in the laboratory can have a real impact on the treatment and the chances of achieving pregnancy.

Irene Reguera What continues to surprise you most about being an embryology specialist?

After so many years, it still surprises me that something so microscopic can represent such a huge life project for a family.

I think I never cease to be amazed by how each embryo has its own rhythm and development. No two days are exactly the same.

This is one of the most important realities of clinical embryology: not all embryos develop in the same way, not all follow the same rhythm, and it is not always possible to predict everything from the very start. That is why observation, the team’s experience and laboratory conditions are fundamental.

Each embryo is assessed with care, respecting its development and always bearing in mind that behind that microscopic image there is a patient or a couple waiting for an opportunity.

Embryonic genetics: a field looking to the future

Within the laboratory, Irene has a particular interest in genetics.

She has always found the genetic aspect fascinating, particularly because of the potential to help prevent the transmission of hereditary diseases and offer families greater peace of mind.

In assisted reproduction, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis can play a significant role in certain cases, such as patients with hereditary diseases, chromosomal abnormalities, recurrent miscarriages, implantation failure or advanced maternal age.

Not all patients need to undergo what we know as PGT-A or embryo genetic testing, but when indicated, it can provide very valuable information for making more precise medical decisions.

At Vida Fertility, these types of tests are always assessed on a case-by-case basis. Genetics is seen as a tool that can help, in specific cases, to improve the safety of treatment and reduce certain risks.

Irene: Why is the laboratory so important in fertility treatment?

Many patients come to a fertility clinic thinking mainly about the consultation, the medication or the embryo transfer. However, an essential part of the treatment takes place in the laboratory.

The laboratory influences very important aspects, for example:

That is why having a specialised laboratory, advanced technology and an experienced embryology team is an essential part of the treatment.

In assisted reproduction, success does not depend on a single factor. It depends on age, ovarian reserve, oocyte quality, sperm quality, the endometrium, embryo genetics, each patient’s medical history and also on the coordinated work between the clinic and the laboratory.

Irene Reguera, what advice would you give to patients who are starting their fertility treatment?

I would tell them to trust their team of specialists, because they are the ones who will support them throughout the treatment with a shared goal: to bring a healthy baby into the world.

Starting fertility treatment can raise many questions. It is normal to want to understand every step, every result and every decision. It is also normal to feel fear, impatience or uncertainty, especially if there have already been unsuccessful IVF cycles or previous unsuccessful attempts.

At Vida Fertility, every treatment is approached from a holistic perspective: medical consultation, laboratory work, patient care and emotional support work in coordination so that each person understands their process and feels supported from day one.
