Dr Elena Santiago is a renowned specialist in gynaecology. She graduated in Medicine and Surgery and completed her residency in Gynaecology and Obstetrics. During her career, she has specialised in infertility, assisted reproduction, gynaecological and obstetric ultrasounds, among other areas.

Dr Elena Santiago, why did you specialise in Assisted Reproduction?
I think my relationship with assisted reproduction began at school. My favourite class was biology. When the time came to choose a degree, I was torn between biology and medicine, but I ultimately chose the medicine because I wanted to study the human body and be in contact with patients in the future.
When selecting a speciality, I chose gynaecology because I was fascinated by the world of pregnancy and because it gave me the opportunity to dedicate myself to human reproduction. Once I completed my training, it was a certainty: I was going to dedicate myself to fertility, and the experiences I’d had in fertility centres during my studies had confirmed this choice.
What still surprises you the most about your work?
Until you are fully immersed in this world, you don’t realise how vast it can be, how rewarding it is to diagnose and personalise the treatment for each patient, and how complex some cases can become when achieving pregnancy. But I am fortunate to say that I love my job, I enjoy every day, and I relish in continuously learning new things to help those who need it.
And if I must choose one thing, despite having been in this field for quite a few years now, the work in the laboratory still feels like science fiction to me. The moment of the embryo transfer is pure magic, and after each procedure, I love to think that the patient will achieve this much-desired pregnancy, and in a few months, have her baby in her arms.
Dr Elena Santiago, how has Reproductive Medicine changed since your university days?
Medicine, in general, is advancing by leaps and bounds, and we are fortunate to work in a field where there is still much to discover.
Since my university days, it’s incredible how much progress has been made. Every year, new techniques, tools… are discovered and applied in our daily clinical practice, and we must constantly keep ourselves updated to offer the best to our patients.
The future looks promising, and we will likely have even more tools to understand the reasons behind a negative pregnancy test or miscarriages, which will allow us to offer increasing success guarantees.
What can you say about the bond created with your patients?
The bond with our patients is very strong. We guide them, support them, and accompany them until they achieve pregnancy. They trust us completely to make their dream come true, and our mission is to take the best possible care of them throughout the process, to make it as bearable as possible.
This creates a very strong bond that sometimes even continues over time after pregnancy and the birth of their children.
Dr Elena Santiago, what advice would you give to patients starting their fertility treatment?
One of the toughest moments in the process is making the decision to undergo a fertility treatment. Then the most complicated part is knowing what to expect at each stage of the journey. I know it’s not easy, but for everything to go as smoothly as possible and to make it psychologically easier, I recommend patients that they let themselves be carried along.
We often err on the side of too much control, and as soon as something doesn’t go according to plan, the frustration is all the greater. Assisted reproduction often depends on biological factors that are difficult to control and predict, so it’s best to approach it with an open mind and let events take their course.
Sooner or later, they’ll achieve their goal of becoming parents, and we’ll be by their side along the way.
