Oocyte Denudation in IVF: what is it, what it does, and why is it key in Assisted Reproduction
Today, let’s take a closer look at the oocyte denudation. This procedure, often considered a key step in an in vitro fertilisation (IVF), is explained to us by Vida Fertility’s laboratory.
Leonor Ortega and María Celda confirm that this process is fundamental in the IVF field. It involves removing the cells surrounding the oocyte (egg) before its fertilisation. These cells, known as granulosa cells and cumulus cells, form a protective layer around the oocyte in the ovary.
What are the goals of the Oocyte Denudation?
- Enhancing Fertilisation: By removing the cells surrounding the oocyte, sperm has direct access to the egg during the in vitro fertilisation process. This can increase the fertilisation success rates.
- Assessing Maturity: The appearance and morphology of the oocytes can be more accurately evaluated after the denudation. This is crucial in selecting mature oocytes suitable for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) or traditional fertilisation.
- Reducing Polyspermy Risk: Denudation can also help reduce the risk of polyspermy, which occurs when multiple sperm attempt to fertilise the same oocyte, which could lead to abnormal fertilisation and embryo development.
- Genetic Studies: In some cases, denudation is performed to allow genetic analysis of the oocyte before its fertilisation. This is common in procedures like Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) like Aneuploidy Screening (PGT-A), aiming to detect genetic abnormalities before the embryo transfer.
Difference between FIV and ICSI
-
When we speak about In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), we refer to the procedure used for the union of the egg and the sperm. This process happens in the laboratory, outside the woman’s body.
- ICSI Technique, High Success Rates in Fertilization
In the traditional approach of In Vitro Fertilisation, the egg and sperm are placed together on a culture dish to facilitate natural fertilisation. At Vida Fertility, we consistently employ the ICSI technique (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), which involves microinjecting the sperm directly inside the egg.
