The decision to become a mother does not always come at an ideal time, and in many cases, the road to motherhood is not an easy one. We talked to Dr. Katharina Spies about the age limit for fertility treatments.

“Throughout my career as a gynaecologist specialising in fertility, I have accompanied many women who, like you, have decided to take this step at ages traditionally considered advanced for motherhood.”

Important:

Although Spanish law does not establish a maximum age, at Vida Fertility we only perform assisted reproduction treatments up to the age of 50, based on medical and ethical criteria.

If you are 45 years old and are looking to get pregnant, you should know that assisted reproduction offers options and treatments adapted to each stage of life, and in Spain, legislation and clinics like Vida Fertility allow us to offer you real alternatives.

In this article, I will talk about the maximum age limit for Assisted Reproduction treatments in Spain, the fertility treatments recommended for each case, and how the age of the woman can influence the success of the treatment.

What is the maximum age for undergoing assisted reproduction treatment in Spain?

In Spain, there is no law that establishes a strict age limit for access to assisted reproduction in private clinics. However, in practice, fertility clinics usually establish a recommended age limit in order to offer maximum safety and success in the treatments. Normally, the age limit is 50 years for the mother, although this may vary depending on the medical assessment and circumstances of each case.

At Vida Fertility, we approach each case individually, taking into account your general health, your expectations and your real chances of success.

Maximum Age for Assisted Reproduction Treatments

Maximum Age for Assisted Reproduction Treatments

Assisted Reproduction TreatmentRecommended Maximum Age (in Spain)Description
Artificial Insemination (AI)Up to 38-40 yearsBeyond this age, AI success rates decrease significantly, so it is recommended to consider other options like IVF.
In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)Up to 42-43 yearsIVF is a common option for women up to 45 years, although success rates decline with age, especially after 42.
Egg Donation (IVF with Donor Eggs)Up to 50 yearsEgg donation allows treatment for women up to 50, as donor eggs come from young, healthy women, enhancing success rates.
Frozen Embryo TransferUp to 50 yearsWomen who have frozen embryos can use them until age 50. Success depends on the quality of the embryos and the patient’s health.
Fertility Preservation (Egg Vitrification)No age limit for vitrification, but recommended before 35Vitrification allows egg preservation at a younger age for future use. The younger the eggs, the better the quality and success rates.

Age limit for In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is one of the most common assisted reproduction treatments. However, a woman’s age plays a crucial role in the success of this treatment, as the quality and quantity of eggs decreases significantly after the age of 35. In women over 40, especially at the age of 45, the probability of success using their own eggs is low due to egg quality.

  • Recommended age for IVF with own eggs: Up to 42 years of age*. From the age of 43-45*, the success rate decreases considerably. Therefore, in cases of very low ovarian reserve or low egg quality, IVF with egg donation is recommended as a viable alternative.
  • Alternative with egg donation: IVF with donor eggs (ovodonation) allows maintaining a high probability of success even at advanced ages, as the donated eggs come from young, healthy women.

*Please note that these limits may vary according to the recommendations of each clinic and the particular situation of each patient, but these values are approximate.

Egg donation : IVF with donated eggs -* Age limit for fertility treatment in Spain

Egg donation is one of the most recommended options for women over 43 years of age* or those with low ovarian reserve. In this treatment, the eggs come from a young and healthy donor, which guarantees a higher quality and probability of a successful pregnancy.

  • Recommended age for egg donation: Up to 50 years old*. At Vida Fertility, we review each case to ensure that the patient’s health conditions are optimal before beginning treatment. It is important to note that the success of this treatment is not conditioned by the quality of the recipient’s eggs, but by her ability to safely carry a pregnancy.

Dr. Spies adds that ‘Although the recommended age for IVF with oocyte donation can be extended up to 50 years, it should always be taken into account that the general health of the patient and the baby are not at risk’.

* Please note that these limits may vary according to the recommendations of each clinic and the particular situation of each patient, but these values are indicative.

Artificial Insemination (AI) – Age limit for fertility treatment in Spain

Artificial Insemination is a simpler assisted reproductive technique, in which sperm is introduced directly into the uterus during the fertile period. This treatment is less invasive than IVF and is generally recommended for women and men under 40 years of age* who do not have any fertility problems, as after this age, success rates decrease dramatically.

Recommended age for Artificial Insemination: Up to the age of 40*. In older women, AI has low success rates, and therefore, it is recommended to opt for treatments such as IVF or oocyte donation.

*Please note that these limits may vary according to the recommendations of each clinic and the particular situation of each patient, but these values are indicative.

Egg Vitrification – Age limit for fertility treatment in Spain

Egg vitrification is a fertility preservation technique that allows women to freeze their eggs at a time in their lives when they have good oocyte quality, to be used at a later date. This treatment has no specific age limit for the use of vitrified eggs; however, it is ideal for women who wish to postpone childbearing and is recommended before the age of 35* to maximise the chances of success.

*Please note that these limits may vary according to the recommendations of each clinic and the particular situation of each patient, but these values are approximate.

Ovarian Rejuvenation – Age limit for fertility treatment in Spain

Ovarian rejuvenation is a treatment that consists of stimulating the ovaries to improve their function and oocyte quality in women with low ovarian reserve.

  • Recommended age for ovarian rejuvenation: This treatment is evaluated on a case-by-case basis and, although there is no age limit, it is usually applied to women under 45 years of age* with low ovarian reserve who wish to try IVF treatment with their own eggs.

*Please note that these limits may vary according to the recommendations of each clinic and the particular situation of each patient, but these values are approximate.

embryo adoption – Age limit for fertility treatment in Spain

Embryo adoption consists of the transfer of embryos left over from IVF treatments of other couples, who have decided to donate them altruistically.

Women who have frozen their own embryos can also use them in the future to attempt a pregnancy. In both cases, the transfer is performed in a similar way to conventional IVF.

Success rates depend on the quality of the embryos at the time of freezing and the health of the patient at the time of transfer. This treatment is a viable option for women up to the age of 50, as the embryos can be kept in perfect condition in liquid nitrogen tanks through the vitrification process.

It is a widely used alternative when pregnancy with one’s own oocytes is not viable and, as they come from anonymous donors, the law in Spain guarantees both the anonymity and the safety of this process.

Frequently asked questions on the age limit for fertility treatment in Spain

Is it safe for a woman to become pregnant during the menopause?

La Dra. Katharina Spies responds:

Many women consider the possibility of pregnancy during the menopause. Although it is possible through assisted reproduction, it is essential to assess the risks and benefits with a fertility specialist. Menopause is not an absolute bar to childbearing, but it does require a thorough analysis of overall health and possible risks to mother and baby.

Can I access fertility treatments in the Social Security at the age of 45?

Dr. Katharina Spies answers:

In Social Security, access to fertility treatments is usually limited to women up to 40 years of age, although the autonomous communities may vary slightly in their age limits. If you are 45, the most viable option is to go to a private clinic such as Vida Fertility.

What are the risks of pregnancy after the age of 45?

Dr Katharina Spies answers:

Pregnancy in women over 45 has higher risks of complications, such as gestational hypertension, diabetes and premature delivery. At Vida Fertility, we thoroughly evaluate each case to minimise the risks and ensure a healthy pregnancy.

Can I have fertility treatment if I am already in menopause?

Dr Katharina Spies answers:

Yes, ovodonation is a viable option for women in menopause. The maximum recommended age for IVF with ovodonation is 50 years, as long as the woman’s general health allows it.

According to the INE and the women who come to our clinics, the decision to become a mother after the age of 40, or even 45, is increasingly common, and assisted reproduction offers solutions adapted to each woman.
