How to be a single mother? Being a single mother by choice is an increasingly common and fully supported option in Spain thanks to advances in assisted reproductive techniques.

We spoke to Dr. Daniel Bodri of Vida Fertility about fertility clinic and their requirements and what the Spanish law says about being a single mother.

Spanish Assisted Reproduction Legislation

Spanish law on assisted reproduction is inclusive and fully supports the right of women to choose to become single mothers through assisted reproductive techniques.

Law 14/2006 regulates these techniques, guaranteeing access without discrimination to all individuals, regardless of their marital status or sexual orientation.

Furthermore, the legislation protects the welfare of the future child and ensures the anonymity of gamete donors. This law clearly states that gamete donation – both eggs and sperm – must be anonymous and altruistic.

Requirements to be a Single Mother in Spain

Being a single mother by choice in Spain is a completely viable option. Fertility clinics, such as Vida Fertility, offer specific programmes for single women who wish to embark on the journey of motherhood.

The main requirements on how to become a single mother in Spain include:

  • Being of legal age.
  • Being in good physical and psychological health.
  • Undergo a full medical evaluation to determine the most appropriate method of reproduction.

Age limit to become a single mother

When it comes to single parenthood through assisted reproduction, it is crucial to keep in mind that age plays a significant role in the effectiveness of treatments.

A woman’s fertility decreases progressively with age,  especially after the age of 35, which directly affects the success rates of procedures such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF).

Private clinics in Spain generally set an age limit of 50 years for treatments, while Social Security limits access to women up to the age of 40, based on optimising results and minimising medical risks.

Treatment options for Single Mothers

This is the simplest method, where donor sperm is introduced into the uterus at the time of ovulation.

Involves fertilisation of an egg in the laboratory with donor sperm, followed by transfer of the embryo into the uterus.

For single women who cannot use their own eggs, eggs donated by another woman can be used coupled with sperm donation.

Embryo adoption

A process involving the transfer of surplus embryos donated from other couples who had successful fertility treatments.

Choosing a sperm donor in Spain

The choice of a sperm donor is crucial in the process of assisted reproduction in order to become a mother by choice. In Spain, donors remain anonymous, and clinics ensure that donors meet strict health and genetic quality criteria.

Clinics such as Vida Fertility provide information about the donor’s physical characteristics, blood type, and education.

Vida Fertility Single Mother Prices

The cost associated with the different assisted reproductive treatments for a woman wishing to become a single mother varies according to the technique used.

The most affordable option is generally artificial insemination with donor sperm (AID), which is usually less expensive compared to other methods.

On the other hand, in vitro fertilisation (IVF-D) with donor sperm has a higher success rate, as well as if the involvement of an egg donor is necessary. This treatment can be significantly more expensive.

In addition, the double gamete donation has excellent success rates and requires the highest financial investment.

An alternative with an intermediate cost is embryo adoption. It is important to note that these costs do not include the necessary hormone medication, which represents an additional expense in all cases.
